Itinerary

day 1

Addis Ababa

Arrive in the morning + transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, tour the city driving to Mt Entoto for panoramic views of the capital where your guide will point out important landmarks. Return to visit the
day 2

Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar

Fly to Bahir Dar and transfer to where your hotel sits on the shores of Laka Tana, Ethiopia's largest lake. Leave by boat for the Zeghie Peninsula, known for its 14th century round, grass-roofed churches + magnificent wall murals. Afternoon option for either a city tour or an excursion to the Blue Nile Falls, depending on the season, otherwise instead visit the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie at Bizeit, with great views of the town and the place where the Blue Nile flows out of the lake, and then the markets. day 3

Bahir Dar to Simien Mountains NP

Today we set off by road through low lying clouds + mist to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Simien Mountains with an overnight stay in accommodation situated at 3,600m – making it the highest hotel in Africa. In the afternoon enjoy a game drive. (BLD)
day 4

Simien Mountains NP to Gondar

Descend back to Gondar where we will check in to our hotel situated on a hill with panoramic views of the town. Gondar was the first imperial capital from the 17th to mid-19th Century + the Royal Enclosure provides visitors with an idea of what it must have been like in bygone times. About 2km from town is the bath of King Fasilides where a nearby river has been diverted to fill an area the size of a small swimming pool. Tour the ruined palace of Queen Mentowab + the church of Qusquam Mariam before returning to hotel. (BLD)

Gondar to Lalibela

Transfer to the airport for a scheduled flight to Lalibela. Dating back to the 12th|13th Century, King Lalibela built a series of rock hewn churches now acknowledged as one of the wonders of the world. Optional activities can be organised in advance + include a cookery class, a farm visit, or attending a vibrant traditional music house to join in the dancing. (BLD)
day 6

Lalibela

Set off after breakfast on mule or foot to the Church of Ashetun Mariam, about 4hrs round trip, passing small villages + enjoying wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. After lunch drive to the cave church of Yemrehane Christos, with its alternating layers of wood + stone + one of the finest example of its kind in Ethiopia. (BLD)
day 7

Lalibela to Axum

Take a flight to Axum, regarded in the 3rd Century as one of the four great powers of the ancient world. See stellae (single pieces of stone), the tombs + castles of kings, Axum Museum + Mariamstsion Church, built on the site of Ethiopia's first church. A chapel within the church is believed to house the Ark of the Covenant. Inside the grounds we will visit the small museum (women are not allowed inside, nor into the 17th century church built by Emperor Fasilides, but the priests usually bring out some crowns of kings for women visitors to see), and end the day with a visit to the site known locally as Queen Sheba’s Palace. Axum

Drive to Yeha (55kms), Ethiopia's first city dating back more than 2800 years passing dramatic scenery with great photo opportunities. Visit the remains of a temple dedicated to Ilmuqeh, the moon god + Church of Abune Aftse, one of the "9 Saints" who did much to spread Christianity in Ethiopia. (BLD)
day 9

Axum to Addis Ababa

Transfer to airport for return flight to Addis Ababa. Time for some last minute souvenir shopping. Farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant for national food + dancing. (BLD)
