East Africa is generally considered to be the cradle of mankind and where some of the best safaris can be experienced from the unique spectacle of the annual Great Migration in Tanzania’s Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater formed by the collapse of an extinct volcano. This safari experience explores the best places of Northern Tanzania.
Lake Manyara + Pink Horizons
You’ll depart from Arusha and drive over to the Lake Manyara National Park and check in to your lodge accommodation. Whilst small in size, Lake Manyara National Park lies in the Great Rift Valley in the shadow of a 600m-high escarpment and if this is your first safari, seeing elephant and giraffes in the wild for the first time will be imprinted in your memory. On the horizon that shimmers in pink are flocks of flamingos.
Travel across stark landscape to the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world. The Serengeti gives you stunning African panoramas of golden grass savannah teaming with so much wildlife that it is a form of exercise in the 4×4 safari vehicle, jumping up to see a leopard and its kill, or a pride of lions in the shade of a tree. If you have planned to be here for the migration, it will be one of the most sights to experience as almost 2 million animals roam the plains of East Africa – their movements governed by the rains. Game drives are only run inside the park during daylight hours and you will head in all directions looking out for cheetahs, lions, leopards, hyena, jackals, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and many types of herbivores. For adventurous luxury, there is also the option to hot air balloon in the early morning dawn for a truly breathtaking safari experience.
Heading back to accommodation on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, sundowners at sunset watch the sun sink over the edge. Early morning sunrise through misty clouds, descend on to the crater floor armed with your picnic lunch box, binoculars and camera at the ready. An ancient volcano that exploded then collapsed into itself forming a giant crater, Ngorongoro today plays host to a range of eco-systems, from grasslands to swamps, from forests to lakes and this in turn ensures that a wide variety of animal species inhabit the park where you are guaranteed to tick off some of the Big Five.
8 nights' accomodation, meals as indicated by travel agent, all game drives, activities + national park fees as per itinerary, transfers + transports.
Africa is all about contradictions. You’ll find small group tours that have you stepping out of your comfort zone and luxury independent itineraries that allow you to indulge in comfort.
Take a short break in a luxury lodge at Kruger National Game Reserve or a long self-drive through the Garden Route + Winelands around Cape Town. Of course, no Africa brochure would be complete without safari packages – see some of the world’s greatest wildlife from Uganda to Botswana.
