Paradise in Zanzibar
Zanzibar Island is known locally as “Unguya” and is characterised by white sand beaches fringed by palm trees and lapped by turquoise waters, lined with coral reefs brimming with an abundance of marine life. It is also a great place to retreat to after an African safari – to relax after those early morning game drives!
On arrival at Zanzibar Airport you will be met and transferred to the BlueBay Beach Resort and Spa where the days can be spent at leisure – or why not organise one of the experiences below. Pick up and drop off can be organised direct from the hotel.
Zanzibar City Tour
The tour starts at the market from which local fruits + vegetables are sold. Guests visit the Anglican Church, the old slave market, the State House, the Zanzibar Museum opened in 1925 + historic Stone Town, famous for its narrow alleyways + unique, 16th century Portuguese architecture.
Also known as Changu Island it is 30 minutes by motorboat. Formerly used by a slave owner, it became a gaol in 1893 however it was never used as such. See the giant land tortoise, some are over 100 years old. It has a beautiful beach where you can swim or snorkel. (Lunch is not included).
Drive into the hinterland to visit one of the spice plantations. Soak up the smells of vanilla, cloves, cardamom + a myriad of other spices + exotic fruits. Along the route you can visit the Maruhubi Palace, built by Sultan Bargash in 1880, to house his harem.
Extend your stay at Pemba Island for 3 Nights
Or extend your stay in Zanzibar by heading across to Pemba Island. Similar in size to neighbouring Unguja Island, Pemba is, however, less frenetic – an island paradise which has a remarkably remote, authentic feel and a coastline lined with mangroves and secluded beaches. On arrival at Chake Chake Airport you will be met by a Fundu Lagoon representative and transferred to the resort situated on a remote and beautiful beach on the south-western side of the island and only accessible by boat. It is known for its fantastic diving experiences.
3 nights’ accommodation, meals as specified by your travel agent + transfers. Please note that the price does not include Pembla Island of the Venture Far Packages mentioned.
Africa is all about contradictions. You’ll find small group tours that have you stepping out of your comfort zone and luxury independent itineraries that allow you to indulge in comfort.
Take a short break in a luxury lodge at Kruger National Game Reserve or a long self-drive through the Garden Route + Winelands around Cape Town. Of course, no Africa brochure would be complete without safari packages – see some of the world’s greatest wildlife from Uganda to Botswana.
