Walking: Day 2 | Difficulty: Gentle
Cascading Rice Terraces
Leaving Hanoi by overnight train breathe in the crisp fresh mountain air of Lao Cai. A morning walk will import images of water buffalo ploughing emerald green rice fields that slope down weathered granite mountain cliffs and seem to reach halfway to the sky. Spot the difference of some of the ethnic minority groups where one of the biggest is the Black H’mong who have their own language and recognisable by their traditional indigo blue clothing. The colourful Red Dao hill tribe are noted for their bright red headdress, shaved foreheads and eyebrows.
History Lessons of French Colonial Times
Surrounded by jungles and steep terrain, the town is nestled in the Muong Thanh Valley and played a starring role in Vietnam’s modern history when French colonial forces were defeated in a battle that signalled the end of the Indochina empire. Delve into history visiting the museum documenting the 8 year resistance and an intact bunker belonging to General de Castries.
