Experience firsthand the conservation of Orangutan’s

Fly into the city of Sandakan on the northeast coast of Borneo, then travel to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to experience firsthand the conservation efforts being made to ensure the survival of these charismatic primates. Follow your guide along the rainforest boardwalk to witness the morning feeding session and see endearing young orangutans at the newly-completed nursery, then continue to the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre to see the world’s smallest bear.

Wildlife of the Kinabatangan

Journey along Sabah’s longest river, the Kinabatangan, to spot a myriad of birds and wildlife species along the forested banks as you travel to the multi-award-winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge, your base for the next two nights. Keep your eyes peeled for Bornean pygmy elephants and proboscis monkeys as you explore the small tributaries by boat and travel to the Kelenanap Ox-Bow Lake which is renowned for its early-morning birdlife.

Get up close to mammals and reptiles during a naturalist-led stroll along the Hornbill Boardwalk and gain a deeper insight into the region’s rich biodiversity during evening presentations, with the option to participate in daily cultural activities such as Batik painting. Indulge at the Halia Spa and dine under the stars overlooking the Kinabatangan River before experiencing the region’s nocturnal creatures during an optional night safari.

Wild orangutans + bat migrations

After a couple of days wildlife spotting on the waterways around the Sukau Rainforest Lodge, embark on an overland excursion to the Gomantong Cave where orangutans like to feed on fruiting wild figs. Your naturalist guide will lead you on an exploration of the old-growth rainforest that surrounds the cave, staying until sunset when more than two million bats head out for the night while being swooped by predatory eagles.

Sandakan Highlights

Return to Sandakan by boat and spend a day taking in some of the city’s highlights, including the Rainforest Discovery Centre where you can get a bird’s eye view of the jungle along their canopy walk and hanging bridge.
