Orangutan Kalimantan River Cruise Quest
Lose yourself in the steamy tropics of Borneo’s rainforests and rivers with this short cruise down the Rungan. The temptation of discovering Borneo lies in its population of orangutans who flood the forest, swinging from branches and curiously watching from the thickets of the jungle canopy. But primates are not the only prize of these forests; hidden tribes, exotic birds, and sublime sights await the naturally curious who choose to explore these waterways.
Smoky Forests and Serene Paddles
As you touch down in Palangkaraya Airport a driver will be waiting to escort you in style to the Palangkaraya Harbour. Climb aboard your boat and prepare to drift down the forest flooded rivers of beautiful Borneo. Borneo is famed for its smoky rainforests brimming with towering trees and cut in two by meandering rivers. It is also the home of ancestral looking orangutans swinging from the canopy and providing a first-class primate safari.
As you glide downstream, you can gaze out at the stilted houses that seem to float like a mirage. As the sun starts to set, take the canoe out and paddle serenely across onyx coloured waters. Listen for the call of proboscis monkeys and catch a glimpse of exotic hornbills watching from the densely populated trees. Return to the boat for dinner on deck, listening to the natural soundtrack of the jungle at night.
Indigenous Experiences and Orangutans
Linger over breakfast as you make your way gently up the Rungan River, where steamy swamps flank the waters, and trees tower vertically. As you arrive at Bapallas Island, a motorizsd canoe is waiting to take you out to observe the orangutans. The auburn-haired creatures are fascinating to watch, the young ones rolling in the mud and climbing through low hanging trees as the adults sit contemplating the world around them.
Wander the rubber fields and witness a demonstration of rubber tapping to learn more about how indigenous communities survive. Sip spiced coffee with the locals before heading back to the boat for dinner and to rest easy.
Bright Birds and Tribal Talks
As the dawn light forms shadows across the water, head out in a canoe for a spot of bird watching before breakfast. From Brahminy Kites to Stork Billed Kingfishers, Hornbills and Coucals – these forests are rich with exotic feathered friends.
Your land bound excursion of the day is the village of Sei Gohong where you can meet the traditional medicine expert. Guiding you through the forest, showing you which plants and herbs have healing properties, you can learn all about the Ngajus Tribe. Head back to the village and spend some time with the tribe before returning to the boat and continuing your cruise.
One final breakfast on board is a bittersweet moment as you sail back to the shores of Palangkaraya. After you disembark a driver is waiting to transfer you back to the airport, where you can say farewell to beautiful Borneo.
