Hiking in the National Park of the West
Experience the natural wonders and awe-inspiring beauty of some of the United States’ most iconic national parks on this 14-day self-driving adventure from San Francisco to Las Vegas. Admire the giant sequoias and towering waterfalls of Yosemite, wander through the gold-mining ghost town at Bodie and venture into the “Badlands” of Death Valley National Park. Then trek down to the mighty Colorado River in the UNESCO-listed Grand Canyon and explore the Navajo landscapes of Monument Valley before tackling the breathtaking ascent to Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park.
San Francisco to the Sierra Nevada
Begin your adventure in the charismatic city of San Francisco, with a full day to explore its fine museums and hilly streets clustered with colourful Victorian homes. Walk or cycle across the famous Golden Gate Bridge and jump aboard a boat to visit the island prison of Alcatraz, then discover San Francisco’s renowned gastronomy at its farmer’s markets and innovative restaurants.
Then travel east through the rural landscapes of California’s Central Valley and into the Sierra Nevada Mountains to explore one of the United States’ most iconic national parks – Yosemite. Walk through the breathtakingly beautiful Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias at the southern end of the park before continuing north into the world-renowned Yosemite Valley.
Soak up the spectacular panoramas from the Glacier Point lookout, with views towards Yosemite Falls, Vernal Fall, Nevada Fall and Half Dome, then embark on one of the many hikes on offer in the national park. Witness the towering Bridalveil Fall and photograph the iconic natural formation of El Capitan, or secure a permit and attempt the challenging ascent up Half Dome.
If time allows, spend time visiting the Yosemite Museum and the Ansel Adams Gallery where this renowned black and white landscape photographer’s prints are displayed.
Ghost Towns + the Grand Canyon
Begin the following day early with a hike to the summit of Lembert Dome, which looks out across the scenic Tuolumne Meadows, then continue on to the gold-mining ghost town at Bodie State Historic Park to explore its 19th-century buildings. Stop to photograph the surreal landscapes of Mono Lake before continuing to the charming ski town of Mammoth Lakes that nestles high in the Sierra Nevada.
Drive south into the scorchingly hot landscapes of Death Valley National Park, which straddles California’s border with Nevada. Go hiking through the colourful clay and mudstone “Badlands”, encounter the ghost town and petroglyphs of Titus Canyon or soak up the sweeping views along the Telescope Peak Trail.
Get your kicks on Route 66 as you travel east into Arizona to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Grand Canyon National Park, beginning with a hike to Plateau Point, or a walk along the West Rim. You’ll have a full day here to embark on the ever-popular Bright Angel Trail that switchbacks down the canyon to the oasis of Indian Gardens, then experience the unforgettable sunsets at Lipan Point.
Into Navajo Lands
From the Grand Canyon, continue east to explore the towering sandstone buttes of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park where northern Arizona meets Utah. Take in the valley’s highlights along the 17-mile scenic route, then continue on to the city of Page, which serves as the gateway to Lake Powell and the immense Glen Canyon Dam.
Jump aboard a boat to explore Lake Powell’s landscapes from the water or join a jeep tour to visit the wildly photogenic Antelope Canyon. Cross the border into southern Utah to explore the red-tinged rock formations and hoodoos of Bryce Canyon National Park. Soak up its natural wonders along the Rim Trail or admire the fascinating rock formations of Gulliver’s Castle and the Queen’s Castle along the short Queen’s Garden Trail.
The Majesty of Zion National Park
A stone’s throw to the west tower are the steep red cliffs of Zion National Park, with the challenging walk to the rock formation of Angel’s Landing offering unparalleled views. This one’s not for the faint-hearted, with chains bolted to the cliffs providing you with secure handholds as you tackle the steep switchbacks and sheer drop-offs.
If time allows, cool off along the famous Zion Narrows wading hike that leads through the shallow waters of this spectacular slot canyon. Then follow the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive along the Virgin River, which leads to the magnificent waterfalls and hanging gardens of the Emerald Pools.
Your adventure comes to an end amongst the bright lights of Las Vegas, a city that never sleeps in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Witness the monumental themed displays that dominate the 24-hour casinos along “The Strip”, with quirky museums and nightly shows that make this the undisputed Entertainment Capital of the World.
