Drive the Dakotas
Explore South Dakota and North Dakota with miles of sweeping prairies, dense forests and breath-taking mountain scenery, history, culture and outdoor adventure await. This land of “Great Faces, Great Places” offers travellers the chance to experience America’s frontier heritage and pioneer spirit.
Pioneers + Military History
The friendly local accents of North Dakota’s biggest city Fargo are a warm introduction to your two days in this very cold part of the country. Keep off the chill inside shops and breweries and with the famously friendly workers at the Fargo Moorhead Visitors Centre.
A famous photo-op awaits with the iconic woodchopper from the classic movie named after the town. On the third day stop at Jamestown to see the Buffalo Museum, the Frontier Village and the World’s Largest Buffalo before arriving in the state capital of Bismarck for a two-night stay.
Located on the Missouri River, step into the state’s storied past reliving General Custer’s military history at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and the bravery of pioneering American explorers at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.
Green and lush at times and then red raw at others, take in the weathered landscape dotted with buffalo and deer by car on the Loop Drive, or hike or mountain bike the Badlands and Maah Daah Hey Trail. In town is the Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum and the Medora Musical at the outdoor amphitheatre.
Entering South Dakota amidst pine mountains travel to Deadwood, a town born from golden dreams. See its old gaming tables and learn the history of wild frontier legends Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Lead, a small mining town, is a short drive away with the northern Black Hills just a little further. Coming back from a late day drive along the spectacular Spearfish Canyon warms the soul.
Grand Scales of Presidents Past
See centuries of American history up close in the City of Presidents, Rapid City, with its 42 life-sized sculptures of US leaders around town and where you spend two days. The nearby Mount Rushmore National Memorial puts the past on an even grander scale with its 6-storey tall stone sculptures of US Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln.
Drive to Custer Sate Park for a two night stay and uncover the hidden rugged beauty of the Black Hills in the Custer State Park. The Buffalo Jeep Safari brings you within touching distance of these beasts who’ve become so accustomed to tourists cameras being on them they’ll sit down right in the middle of the road. Moose, wild donkeys, wolves, ground hogs and antelopes also roam the park which, with less crowds than Yellowstone National Park can be just as spectacular.
And for a challenging experience, the Needles Eye Tunnel which burrows through a rock formation with barely enough room for a car to squeeze through won’t be easily forgotten.
Spires + Pinnacles
Return to the Badlands National Park from the South Dakota side – a distinct part of this other-worldly, rattlesnake country. The land’s distinct formations of spires and pinnacles were formed when it was a seabed in the Oligocene age, millions of years ago.
Often missed is the one-hour loop drive of the South Dakota Highway 240 between Cactus Flat and Wall which shows the classic vistas of sun-scorched western living. The following day arrive at Sioux Falls, home to iconic waterfalls which gush over massive pink quartz rocks spraying sightseers inside the city centre park. Popular as a meeting point for native Indians centuries ago, their beauty is a focal point today for wedding photos, picnics and casual strolls.
The city’s historic theatres like the Washington Pavilion showcase local artists and shows from Broadway. On day 15 your tour comes to a close when you check out of your hotel and return to Minneapolis.
