Venture Insight

Robert F Kennedy declared this spot as the ‘Last stand of the great American rainforest’, and the Great Bear Rainforest with its ancient glaciers, ribbon like fjords, and coastal grey wolves slinking in the shadows is a sight that will lift the spirits. Those seeking gorgeous grizzly bear encounters will be wooed by the springtime promise of bears fishing in the rivers with their young. Great Bear Lodge is located in the Nekite Valley, 80km from Port Hardy – an eco-friendly floating lodge with 8 bedrooms with ensuites.

Seaplanes + Floating Lodges

From picturesque Port Hardy take the seaplane over the marine rich waters of Queen Charlotte Strait to begin your grizzly bear adventure. Gazing at the cobalt waters below, watch for the fanning tails of orca or the long shadows of Humpback whales.

The fully floating Great Bear Lodge offers a sublime R&R spot for witnessing the greatest shows of nature. With only a handful of bedrooms, you can wake up to waterfront views and watch the sunset cast a glow from your overwater deck with a glass of wine in hand.

Grizzly Bear Encounters

In May and June the grizzlies come down from the mountains to the estuary grasslands to graze on sedges and around mid-August they can be seen as they gorge on fish in anticipation of their coming hibernation. Set sail along the eddies and estuaries of bear country with an experienced wildlife biologist.

Follow the bears from the water to the land, as they hunt for wild trout flitting through the rivers and rough and tumble with their young onshore. Seeing these majestic solitary creatures in their natural habitat is something to treasure.

Morning Mists, Eagles + Otters

Watching the morning light dapple in the forest trees, seeing the mist rise over the water, whilst enjoying wilderness gourmet meals. Go sea-laying with a guide, or an interpretive hike or just simply relax with a book from the extensive natural history library – are just some of the activities to be enjoyed.

You may even see bald eagles drift overhead and otters kick back as they float down river. After watching the natural world rise with the sun, return by flight once more to Port Hardy.

Return floatplane from Port Hardy to Great bear Lodge, 3 nights' accommodation, meals as specified, bear viewing trips as specified.
