The heart of the Old West and gateway to the Rocky Mountains, Denver, Colorado is a city steeped in gritty, gold-plated frontier history. Start your trip immersing yourself in its past or make the most of the modern-day city’s blossoming arts and culture scene.
The next day drive through the big mountains skies of the Rocky Mountain National Park taking the Trail Ridge Road before reaching the city of Cheyenne, Wyoming, home to the world’s largest rodeo every summer. It’s onto Deadwood, South Dakota the following day, a Victorian gold-rush town nestled in a pine-covered mountain gulch near where Kevin Costner filmed Dances With Wolves.
The day after continue into yet more iconic surroundings staying for two nights in Rapid City, South Dakota, the City of Presidents and the stepping stone to the famous Mount Rushmore. The giant stone sculptures of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt are an iconic image of America’s West .
Colour Palettes of Red, Orange + Yellow Landscapes
The scenic Loop Drive is a perfect way to spend a day discovering this rippled landscape. With a week’s driving done keep the car parked and use the next day to explore some more around Medora. It’s then on to the sandstone cliffs of Billings, Montana where the next 24 hours can be spent exploring Little Bighorn Battlefield and the Crow Indian Reservation, or have some down time in the town’s historic shopping and dining precinct.
The tiny town of Red Lodge at the base of the Beartooth Mountains is the next destination, where you drive along one of the most beautiful drives in America, the Beartooth All American Road.
Awestruck by Natural Creations
The picturesque Western town of Cody, Wyoming is the gateway to the world-famous Yellowstone National Park. Take time to visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Centre, widely regarded as America’s premier Western museum.
The next day wind past craggy cliffs to arrive at Yellowstone, the world’s first national park, whose green forests, canyons, alpine rivers, hot springs and geysers captivate and entrance, with ample opportunity to see its bears, wolves and geological marvels.
Two weeks on the road and the next place on the map route is the lively town of Bozeman, Montana, with visitors spoilt for choice with its hiking trails and bountiful fishing spots. The following day’s driving takes you into the picture-perfect town of Whitefish, dwarfed by Big Mountain and the breathtaking peaks and valleys of the Glacier National Park.
Then drive the iconic “Going-to-the-Sun Road”, a dramatic 52 mile highway that crosses the Continental Divide, which will be a memory and an experience to last a lifetime.
American Burgers vs National Parks
As this epic road trip continues, arrive in Missoula where you are embraced with slightly warmer weather in the heart of the northern Rocky’s which makes for an outdoor lover’s dream. If you’re not hiking, fishing or riding then the Smokejumpers Visitor Centre gives a fascinating look into the firefighters who leap from planes to battle bushfires.
The next day brings the town of Hamilton into picture where craft breweries and big American-style burgers will quench the thirst and satisfy the appetite. Entering Wyoming the following day, arrive in the town of Jackson, surrounded by lakes, a valley and the imposing peaks of the Grand Teton National Park followed the next day by Pinedale, an authentic Western town surrounded by three mountain ranges and slow-running rivers.
It’s then onto Rock Springs, home to the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area and its ancient red sandstone cliffs along the reservoir on the Green River. Your tour ends as you checkout of your hotel and return to Denver passing the intersection of flatlands and mountains at Boulder on your way.
